The Founding of a Church

Covenant Family Worship Center, “The Church With The Family Focus”, stands as a testimony of what God can accomplish with a few good men and women, who know God’s ways and not just his acts.  Headed by Christ and under the leadership of Pastor John Hardy, Covenant Family Worship Center was founded in 1999 and began with one family.

After faithfully serving over 15 years in ministry, which culminated in three and a half years as Assistant Pastor of Action Chapel International in Hyattsville, Maryland, Pastor Hardy heard the call of God to head a multi-cultural church known for praise and worship.  With the approval of his pastor, Joshua Shonubi, and the support of the church, Pastor Hardy along with Minister Leatha, his wife, and their two sons and daughter, started Covenant Family Worship Center in Stafford, Virginia.

On February 28, 1999, at 4:00 p.m., an opening ceremony was held to commemorate what God had spoken into the heart of the pastor.  Pastor Joshua led the ceremony attended by approximately 150 witnesses, who faithfully gave of themselves in praise and worship along with their financial support.  This was to set the tone for what is continuing on to this day and has allowed this fellowship of believers to operate in excellence.

The following Sunday, March 7, 1999, at 8:30 a.m., marked the first official worship service.  Assisted by Sister Tutu Marioghae and later on by Brother Kenny Vines as the praise and worship leader, CFWC opened its doors to the heavenly hosts and an audience of one.  God was faithful though, and laid it on the heart of the first visitor, Mrs. Parcilla Brown, to also become the first member outside of the original family.

In June of 1999, after much prayer and consideration the service time was changed to 11:00 a.m. in order to more effectively serve the community. Since then, the church has grown consistently.

Also in June, through faithfulness in giving and because of the vision of the pastor to operate in excellence and have equipment of no less quality than that of the world, CFWC began purchasing its first professional sound system.  This was one of many steps towards the promise from God that Covenant Family Worship Center would be a church known for praise and worship.  Skilled musicians, namely Kareemus Gary and Stephen Stafford, later followed to assist Covenant Family Worship Center’s minister of music, Darvin Hardy.  Through their efforts and assistance to the praise and worship team, and in establishing the choir, both the vocal and instrumental music greatly improved.
